Stereotypes in cartoons

We all like cartoons, right? But, have you ever thought about the all the stereotypes that cartoons show us? For example, in "The Simpsons", they show things like all black people are really good at basketball. One time they made an episode about the Brazilians where they showed them like thiefs and like poor people. Another example is "South Park", in that series they always show the Mexicans like stupid people who always are looking for jobs and both series many times have shown stereotypes of black people, Native Americans, Japaneses, Chineses, and a few others. There are many more examples of this in another cartoons and maybe we think that this is not a great thing just because this are cartoons. But think about this, if a cartoon shows a stereotype of Chilean people and everyone in the rest of the world laugh about this, How will you feel? Would you laugh too? Or would you feel upset? think about this, because probably the next stereotype that you could see in TV, could be you.

  1. I really like your post because I think the same about cartoons. It is true, most of cartoons in MTV show stereotypes about the people that you mencioned before. Some cartoons are offensive.
That's why we have to teach to future generations respect for diversity.

  2. Well, I have to explain that the reason of why these cartoons (The Simpson and South Park) show us a lot of stereotypes (often offensive) is because the creators of these shows are try criticize the US's society, I mean, The Simpsons of SP are an american stereotype too. They show us how apparently acid can be the peoplo in the United States.
But there are some other cartoons that are very stereotypical, for example the only black superhero that I know is Green Lantern, the main characters always are white people, especially in cartoons made since the middle of the XX century. I think that most of this tv shows have to change this way of entertaining, they are just planting a racist education on our children, THIS MUST STOP

  3. I think the same as you: the stereotypes in cartoons are very common and accepted by almost all the people because are funny and you laugh at people´s behavior or mistakes ,but when someone laugh at you or at your community you feel bad and totally discriminated. The big problem here is that those stereotypes are showed like cartoons to children and they grow up believing that black people will always like... or chinese people will always... and here is when we as future teachers will have to try to change their minds and teach to them about tolerance and respect.
